Encouraging research helpful to the appreciation and preservation of historical prints is central to the American Historical Print Collectors Society's mission. The AHPCS has long been active in promoting the study of Currier & Ives prints. Several massive publications provide detailed information on prints issued by Nathaniel Currier and the firm of Currier & Ives. Frederick A. Conningham first issued his groundbreaking checklist, Currier & Ives Prints: An Illustrated Checklist, in 1949. When last updated in 1983, Conningham's catalog included over 6,896 entries. In 1984, Gale Research Company published Currier & Ives, A Catalogue Raisonne. This source contains information on 7,450 prints, contributed by collectors and organizations including the AHPCS. Still, additional "uncataloged" Currier & Ives prints continue to be discovered. John and Barbara Rudisill recently contributed a remarkable addition to the Currier & Ives catalogue raisonne. Their article, "Some Previously Uncataloged Currier & Ives Prints," appears in a recent issue of Imprint (Volume 22, Number 1, p. 16-24). Detailing the spelling, capitalization, and punctuation as appears on the prints, the Rudisills cataloged one hundred and fifteen undocumented prints. They state, these prints are "not included in Conningham or Gale that we have recorded in recent years. Variations of previously recorded titles are included only if we consider the differences to be significant." Built on the strong foundation of the Rudisills' excellent work, the following list catalogs Currier & Ives prints not found in Conningham's or Gale's works. The AHPCS welcomes all collectors to send us C & I information for inclusion in this list. For detailed explanations of the use of this list, please consult our guide.
